Designed to deliver impressive performance levels & energy efficiency while still retaining all the benefits of working with an open, industry-standard ARM® architecture, the STM32 is the first offering from STMicroelectronics aimed at reshaping the MCU market.
Based on the ARM® Cortex™ M3 core, aimed at embedded applications requiring a combination of high performance (1.25 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz), low power & low cost, the STM32 is currently available in two main flavours - the "Performance" & "Access" lines. The STM32F103 ("Performance") boasts 72MHz & claims best-in-class 32-bit performance, while the STM32F101 ("Access") offers a slower 36MHz clock frequency but enough power to entice 16-bit customers with a significant increase in performance whilst maintaining the same competitive 16-bit pricing levels.
In performance terms, the STM32 family offers up to 30% faster processing than an equivalent ARM7TDMI-based product, or, for the same processing power, STM32 devices require 75% less power. The addition of the Thumb 2 instruction set also aims to improve performance by allowing designers to reduce codes size by up to 45%.
Both lines offer from 32K to 128K of embedded Flash memory but differ in maximum SRAM size & peripheral combinations. At 72MHz, executing from Flash, the STM32 consumes only 36mA, the lowest power consumption in the 32-bit market, corresponding to an impressive 0.5mA/MHz.
Ideal for battery-operated applications, the STM32 operates from a 2.0 to 3.6V power supply, with power consumption down to 2 microamps in standby mode.
Also available on board are: Up to 20KB of RAM, up to two ADCs (12-bit at 1 microsecond conversion time), up to three USARTs; up to two SPI (18MHz master/slave); up to two I2C; up to three 16-bit timers (4 input capture/4 output compare/4 PWM each) & a dedicated 6-PWM timer with embedded dead times for regulation & motor control vector drive applications, in addition to USB, CAN, & seven DMA channels.
This MCU is a powerful choice for the designer whether developing for traditional applications such as domestic appliances, security, fire, HVAC systems or for the portable market where raw processing potential & low-power consumption are always deciding factors.
