Looking
for an entry-level micro that offers simplicity without sacrificing all important
design flexibility & performance? Then Freescale Semiconductor could well
hold the answer.
The RS08KB 8-bit microcontroller family aims to strike the crucial balance between flexibility & ease of use.
Featuring a von Neumann architecture RS08 core (shared program & data bus), the RS08KB offers an integrated peripheral set designed to improve system performance & reduce additional component cost. Operating from as little as 1.8V (to 5.5V), with a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the micro provides up to 10MHz internal bus (20MHz RS08 core) offering reliable performance throughout the entire voltage range.
The RS08KB is available in various different memory configurations from a 2KB Flash & 126B RAM variant through to a 12KB Flash & 254B RAM model.
On board there are host of peripherals including: A 12-channel 10-bit resolution ADC, a two-channel TPM, two 8-bit modulo timers with optional clock sources & an analogue comparator (ACMP) with option to compare to internal reference to provide fast, precise sensing & control.
Also onboard is an Real Time Interrupt (RTI) an I2C module & up to 18 general purpose input/output (GPIO) pins, including one input only & one output only pin.
The micro also provides system protection in terms of illegal opcode detection with reset, illegal address detection with reset & flash block protection to protect code from unauthorised reading & to guard against unintentional write/erase of user code/data.
Primarily aimed at the small appliance/hand-held/remote control device markets, the micro has been keenly priced to try & win business from other established players in the field. 10K-off suggested pricing for the RS08KB12 starts from $0.71 (USD) while the RS08KB2 starts from a suggested price of $0.46 (USD) - manufacturers suggested retail price.
